Fav places I would take you to tea if you came to MALACCA, MALAYSIA (ONE OF OUR COMPANY’S BRANCHES)

We’ve all been there: you’re visiting the historical city of Melaka and there’s so much more to see, but the weather is hot, you’re tired from walking, and all you want is a place to sit back, relax, and enjoy a cuppa. We’ve got your problems solved with these café gems strategically located within Melaka Raya and even Jonker Street! Read on to find out where you can get South American coffee, chicken rendang pizza, and succulent smoked duck breast.

Khaki Coffee Bar

Located by Jalan Melaka Raya, Khaki Coffee Bar is almost dismissible for its simple white exterior, but the coffee-related merch displayed in their windows will definitely catch your eye. This small and cosy cafe not only serves different brews every week, but works with a localised community of coffee lovers and café owners alike, offering machine repairs, barista training, and even coffee bean sourcing!

Khaki Coffee Bar does plenty more than just cater to café-goers

Though they do serve food such as sandwiches and desserts, the main attraction at Khaki is of course, their coffee! Choosing from their adorable handmade menu of twine and cardboard, we settled on a shakerato (RM9.90) – a double espresso ice shake that tasted remotely of berries upon our first sip, before warming down to a richer coffee flavour. This was served in a flute similar to the coffee from our visit to typical Cafe No.2 in Ampang.

A flute of coffee with layers of flavours

We felt the need to try Khaki’s mulberry tea (RM9), considering it was given a special place as                 bookmark in their menu. Surprisingly, the                flavors were very woody, having an earthy taste in  contrast to any fruity expectations, but it’s               definitely a must-try in our books.

This woody, herbal tea will have you wanting more

For a good place to get out of the hot sun and indulge in a fancy tea, visit the GourmetBar at the new Novotel in Melaka Raya! Their modern bar with cosy contemporary seats will put you immediately at ease, so much so that they might just make you want to stay a little longer! GourmetBar has plenty of drinks and food on their menu with a health-conscious twist, but they don’t stinge on the flavour factor either!

Escape the heat at Novotel’s GourmetBar with some healthy drinks and snacks!

Start yourself off with a Juicing Cucumber (RM18), made of cucumber juice, honey as sweetener, and a little salt for taste to cool yourself down. GourmetBar also has an extensive selection of detox drinks, mocktails, shakes, and smoothies that will definitely help keep the heat away.

A great pick-me-up for your afternoon tea

Local dishes and platters are the signature selections here, such as the seafood char kuey and Nyonya pie tee (RM10 each). These crispy shells are generously filled with shredded turnip and cucumber, then topped with a large prawn on each serving. We suggest eating these in one bite, so you get all the savoury juices at the bottom of the shell!

Pop these pie tees so they don’t spill!

For a great value meal, order the mini heritage chicken rendang pizza (RM18) to share! However, you might want this all to yourself once the rich aroma of rendang hits you when it’s served – this is one dish you won’t want to miss out on at GourmetBar. Local flavours are beautifully combined with this Italian dish, and you’ll find yourself reaching for more with every slice.

You can tell it’s a good pizza when the cheese stretches that far

The Daily Fix

If you’re looking to take a break from wandering around Jonker Street in the afternoon, then we’ve got just the café for you. The Daily Fix is located at the back of a souvenir shop, with a cool interior and super instagrammable decor. The place is extremely popular with youngsters and foreigners alike, drawing in the crowd from Jalan Hang Jebat.

This cosy café is full of vintage repurposed furniture and knick knacks

Among their many selections of coffee, we chose the rose latte (RM11) which came with edible rose petals and had just a hint of rose syrup – sweet enough to not have any sugar added. Their long black (RM9) was pretty decent, and will give you some energy to brave the rest of Jonker Street. Other thirst-quenching drinks on their menu include cold pressed juices with punny names, each at RM 11.

The edible rose petals on the edge were a nice touch

For a quick fix, we had the smoked duck pancakes (RM19.90) complete with spinach dip, roasted tomatoes, and a sprinkling of walnut crunch. The smoked duck breast was excellent, with a tender consistency and an addictive savoury taste. The pancakes on their own were fluffy and very slightly sweet, but if this pairing doesn’t do it for you, you can also have the smoked duck in a ciabatta sandwich (RM17.50) or even a salad with green coral lettuce, walnuts, and sesame soy dressing (RM18.50)!

The smoked duck breast at The Daily Fix is a must-try, whether on pancakes, in a sandwich, or even a salad

Nido Café

If quiet and relaxation is what you’re looking for, Nido Café is the perfect place. Located on the second floor of a shop lot, you’ll have to be buzzed in when you visit, but once you’re inside you’ll find the staff very inviting. A display case of pastries and a variety of breads are on the counter to the left, while their only menu is on the chalkboard behind the bar.

Drinks take centre stage here at Nido Cafe

Comfortable spaces, grouped almost like private areas take up the majority of the café. There’s a large magazine shelf of coffee table books in Mandarin for diners to flip through, while the owner’s eccentric collection of miniature model cars lay claim to the right side of the counter. Find your own space and delight in one of Nido’s many drinks, such as the bubbly Nido Special (RM12), a mix of carbonated water, a citrusy syrup, and plenty of fruits for a fizzy sour flavor to restart your taste buds.
The never ending bouncing blueberries get our vote for the most interesting drink in Melaka.

The hot chocolate (RM10) was delicious, and the barista even managed some foam art for it. It wasn’t too sweet nor too thick, and the slightly bitter chocolatey taste was just right. The tiramisu we ordered off the shelf wasn’t bad either, and we especially liked the crispy chocolate balls on top.

The sprinkling on cocoa dust on top was the perfect touch. This spongy tiramisu is the perfect

match for your afternoon cuppa

Now that you’ve got the perfect spots to recharge, go on out there and explore whatever else Melaka has to offer!
